John H. Twomey, PhD, author of Retiring To, Not From: From Massachusetts Professor to Maine Farmer, will talk about the benefits of living simply and sustainably on Wednesday, October 17, from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. at Camden Public Library. The event, offered free of charge, is part of Quarry Hill’s Adventures in Living Well series for adults age 50-plus and will be co-sponsored by the library.
In 2009, after 37 years as a professor at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, Twomey and partner, Leigh, moved to an aging Montville, Me., homestead that John had purchased in 1978. Living entirely off the grid, he and Leigh produce their own food and firewood while working to maintain and improve the farm’s wildlife habitat. Twomey’s book (copies of which will be available for purchase and signing) has been heralded as essential reading for anyone seeking to live in harmony with the natural world.
Like all Adventures programs, the program requires advance registration. To sign up, please call Quarry Hill at
