Professor Allen, who lived for many years in India, is regarded as one of the world’s leading scholars on India’s Hinduism, Buddhism, and Mahatma Gandhi—whose nonviolent opposition to British rule led to India’s independence in 1947. Allen will share some relevant positive values from the philosophy of Gandhi, as well as some contemporary views on “India Rising.”
Doug Allen retired in 2020 after 46 years as Professor of Philosophy at the University of Maine. He is the author/editor of 18 books, and more than 150 book chapters and journal articles. A scholar-activist, Allen has been a leading voice in the American Civil Rights Movement, the Antiwar Movements, and numerous peace and justice struggles in the U.S. and in India.
This event is presented in anticipation of the 37th Annual Camden Conference, “INDIA: Rising Ambitions, Challenges at Home” taking place live from the Camden Opera House from February 16-18, 2024.
