On Exhibit: “If You Give a Girl a Camera” from the Penobscot Marine Museum

Wednesday, April 2 Tuesday, April 29

Camden Public Library is pleased to once again be partnering with the Penobscot Marine Museum during Maritime Month! The museum’s exhibit “If You Give a Girl a Camera” will be on view in the Picker Room Gallery at the Camden Public Library during Maritime Month this April.*

Joanna Colcord and Ruth Montgomery each used photography to pass the time and to document voyages at sea. Both came from small, coastal Maine communities with long legacies of seagoing. If You Give a Girl a Camera looks specifically at the years 1899 and 1900 when Joanna and Ruth sailed from the United States as 18-year-olds and features photographs the girls took at that time.

Large prints formatted with a social media vibe seek to meld the past and present and encourage visitors to consider Joanna and Ruth as people like you and me. What did a young woman take pictures of in 1899 or 1900? What do you take pictures of today?
