The Camden Public Library welcomes naval architect and marine engineer James Bennet on Tuesday, April 25 at 6:30 PM for a presentation about storm surge risk and mitigation in our own Camden Harbor. Bennett’s talk will review the history of severe storms that have affected Camden Harbor compared with the most recent storm that occurred on December 23, 2021. He will also discuss past attempts to mitigate storm impact by constructing a breakwater at the outer harbor, challenges we face going forward, and possibilities to consider.

James G Bennett has had a distinguished career as a practicing naval architect and marine technology and product developer. For General Dynamics he lead the development of the Independence class Littoral Combat Ship, a 126 m 40 knot aluminum trimaran of which more than 20 have been built for the US Navy. For Raytheon Company he lead the development of the scalable SPY-6 solid state radar that is presently being installed on all US naval surface combatants and amphibious ships. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan and holds a B.S.E. in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering and a M.S.E. degree in Ship Hydrodynamics. In In 2017, Jim was elected to the National Academy of Sciences and served on the Marine Board where he was the principal advisor on autonomous marine vehicle development. Jim is a resident of Camden, Maine, where he continues to work as consultant while avidly pursuing his interests in sailing, skiing, hiking and environmental conservation.
